Helping Others
My purpose on Earth is to help people, both personally and professionally. I find, usually, the best way to help people is
by listening to them, inspiring them, and guiding them how to help themselves.
Here are some ways I help people:
- Listen and understand (empathy).
- When people ask for my advice, I usually ask them questions so that they come up with the answers themselves. But if that isn't working, I try to describe all sides of the situation, because oftentimes I think of things they had not considered.
- When less fortunate or hurting people ask for my help, I try to provide them the assistance they need and to comfort them. Sometimes just lending an ear or a hand on a shoulder is all they wanted.
- When people ask for my knowledge and experiences, I enjoy explaining them through stories. I've told "The Boilermaker Story" or "Knowing Where To Tap" dozens of times.
- Mentor young people or those new to a position at work so they can receive training in best methods and also to help them consider the long-term effects of their short-term decisions.
- Wherever I am, I offer assistance, no matter how large or small.
- Be the best role model (example) I can be.
Helping people sometimes involves getting them to think about doing things differently than what they are used to. At work, this falls under Change Management. Please read two paragraphs on that page starting with the one that begins with "The first thing I try to do ..."
